Good idea, maakuntamatkailu can be an eyeopener. There's a bunch of old stuff in Finland you never get around to see otherwise, old guidebooks are as good as new in that sense.

In addition to plastic bags, there's a lot of consumer products that require oil in their production: integrated plastic parts are essential for the operation of mobile phones, computers, cars, vacuum cleaners and washing machines - basically every mass-consumed product - but oil products are also essential components of cheap daily cosmetics, shampoos and soaps (and of the plastic their containers are made of as well).
I feel that in many ways the plastic has been made too integral a part of the consumerist system and of economy that it would disappear without consequences - it will just get more expensive as will the products that depend on it.
